WESMEN SWEEP HUSKIES2013-01-19
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a home court weekend sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies with a straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-11) at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
Winnipeg (6-10) on the season beat the Huskies (3-13) in straight sets in Friday night's opening match.
The Wesmen started strong in the opening set scoring six of the first eight points to gain the early advantage. The Wesmen continued to put pressure on the Huskies jumping out to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg led by Ozan Nikolic's six kills in the opening set went on to win the set 25-19.
In set number two, Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and once again never trailed as they built a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Tia Boroski came off the bench in the late part of the set and was on the service line for five straight points to extend Winnipeg's lead to 23-16. Winnipeg went on to win the second set by a tally of 25-18.
The Huskies grabbed their first lead of the match in the third set leading 6-3 early on. Winnipeg stormed back to take a commanding 16-8 lead at the technical timeout and went on to close out the match in convincing style winning the third set 25-11.
Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 15 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .346.Nikolic led the team in digs with 13. Carleen Kruschel added nine kills. Sarah Lynch was strong at the net finishing with four blocks. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 34 assists and four blocks.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 12 kills. Haley Williams had a match high 17 digs. Jina Barker had 24 assists.
Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton next week to face the Alberta Pandas. Saskatchewan will be at home against Brandon.
