BIG THREE FRAMES GIVES HUSKIES WIN2013-01-18
Allowing the visiting UBC Okanagan Heat to score just 38 points in the first three quarters, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies ran to an 87-65 win Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Opening the game on a 7-0 run, the Huskies outscored the Heat 22-13 in the first frame and 22-14 in the second to lead 44-27 at halftime. Saskatchewan continued to pour the ball into the basket after the break, outscoring UBC Okanagan 26-11 in the third quarter.
UBC Okanagan’s struggle to find the net translated to hitting just 10-of-33 field goal attempts in the first half. The Heat improved in the fourth quarter outscoring the Huskies 27-17.
The Heat finished the night shooting 32.3%, while Saskatchewan shot at 50.8% in the game. The Huskies strong defence also won the battle on the boards outrebounding the Heat 50-26 and scored 20 points on the second chance.
With the win, Saskatchewan moves to 7-6 on the season, while the Heat drops to 5-9.
In the win, Saskatchewan spread the ball around with four different Huskies scoring double-digits including three with a double-double on the night. Fourth-year guard Kiera Lyons led the foursome with 19 points and 10 rebounds, followed by post Dalyce Emmerson with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kelsey Trulsrud also had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Riley Humbert chipped in with another 12 points for the Huskies.
Madison Kaneda led the Heat on the night with 17 points, followed by Angela White with 12 and Sarah Allison with 10. Roslyn Huber was strong on the boards nabbing a team-high eight boards.
The Huskies host the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Saturday night at the PAC, while the Heat will travel to Edmonton to face the University of Alberta Pandas.
