HUESER LEADS HUSKIES OVER WOLFPACK2013-01-11
University of Saskatchewan women’s volleyball captain Candace Hueser tallied a match-high 12 kills to lead the Huskies to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-15) victory over the visiting Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Hueser, who battled injury in the first half of the season, finished the match with a .429 hitting percentage, one service ace, two digs and one block assist. Rookie middle blocker Emily Humbert was also strong in the match with eight kills and three service aces. In the match, the Huskies had 16 services aces with six from Carmen Dubnick.
Julia Niemczewska led the WolfPack with four kills and two block assists. Rachel Murray and Katarina Osadchuk each tallied three kills for Thompson Rivers.
With the win, Saskatchewan moves to 2-11 on the season, while Thompson Rivers (0-13) is still in search of their first win of the season. The match was the first of the second half of the Canada West women’s volleyball season for both teams.
Opening the first set strong, the Huskies pulled ahead 6-1. Holding a six-point lead in the middle of the set, the WolfPack seemed to find their grove and pulled within 13-9 on a service ace and an error by Saskatchewan. But that was as close as they would come. Saskatchewan closed out the set 25-13 on six serves by Dubnick that included three aces.
Thompson Rivers kept up with the Huskies to begin the second set and were helped by three Saskatchewan service errors. But at 8-6, two Jina Barker kills put the Huskies back ahead. Saskatchewan led by no less than four for the remainder of the 25-12 win.
In the final set, Saskatchewan jumped out to a quick lead and theWolfPack couldn’t get back in the match losing 25-15.
The two teams will battle again Saturday night at the PAC. Match time is 6:15 p.m. It can be watched on www.canadawest.tv
