CIS WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW2013-02-28

OTTAWA (CIS) – The Brock University women and Concordia University men hope to defend their team titles this weekend when the top varsity wrestlers in the country meet in London, Ont., for the 2013 CIS championships.

The two-day national meet returns to Western University for the first time since 2000. The preliminary rounds are set for Friday, starting at 10 a.m., with the classification matches (10 a.m.), bronze-medal bouts (12:30 p.m.) and championship finals (2:30 p.m.) following on Saturday at Alumni Hall.
 
All sessions from both days will be webcast live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie wrestling teams will be led by four fifth-year athletes at the 2013 CIS Championship.

Leading the way for the Huskies on the men’s side will be reigning champion in the 72-kg weight class Ryan Myrfield. The fifth-year won his fourth straight Canada West gold medal in 2013 and will look for his fourth straight CIS gold. Fifth-year Landon Squires took his fourth straight Canada West medal in the 90-kg weight class at the 2013 conference championship. He has won two CIS silver medals in his career.

To help the two senior wrestlers in CIS experience will be Dylan Bray (57-kg), Shane Johnson (54-kg) and Theo Dow (61-kg). Malcolm Meekins (65-kg) and Samson Swan (130-kg) will compete on the national stage for the first time.

Five Huskies qualified for the CIS Championship on the women’s side including fifth-year Canada West silver medalists Natasha Kramble (48-kg) and Koren Pitkethly (59-kg). Kramble is a two-time CIS bronze medalists, while Pitkethly has won silver twice on the national stage. Second-year Hannah Franson (55-kg) won a bronze in 2012 at the CIS Championship, while Silke Svenkeson (51-kg) and Taylor Follensbee (72-kg) will compete for the first time at the national championship.

Saskatchewan’s men enter the CIS Championship after finishing in second at the conference championship, while the women finished fourth.
