SPORTSNET TO BROADCAST 2013 UNIVERSITY CUP2013-02-26
OTTAWA (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Tuesday an agreement with Sportsnet to broadcast its men’s hockey championship for the sixth consecutive year.
Sportsnet will have live coverage of the final three games from the 2013 PotashCorp University Cup, presented by Co-op, including a pair of pool play contests on March 16 and the gold-medal match on March 17.
“We are thrilled to have the University Cup back on Sportsnet for the sixth straight season,” said CIS president Leo MacPherson. “Over the years, Sportsnet has shown undeniable support for our student-athletes and has played a key role in elevating the University Cup brand and promoting CIS hockey.”
“Sportsnet is Canada’s prime destination for all things hockey and we are looking forward to providing viewers with unparalleled coverage of the University Cup,” said Navaid Mansuri, vice-president of Finance & Sports Programming, Rogers Media. “We’re excited to continue our strong relationship with CIS.”
Sportsnet has been the official broadcaster of the CIS men’s hockey championship since 2008. The network has since televised 14 games from the event, including the memorable final from last year’s 50th anniversary tournament that saw the McGill Redmen edge Western in overtime to capture the first national title in the storied history of their program.
The University of Saskatchewan hosts the 2013 championship from March 14 to 17 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.
Three teams have already qualified for the competition, including the host Saskatchewan Huskies, their Canada West archrivals, the Alberta Golden Bears, as well as the Saint Mary’s Huskies from the Atlantic conference.
The second AUS berth will go to either UNB or UPEI, while four schools are still in the hunt for the two OUA spots, including UQTR, Carleton, Windsor and Waterloo.
“We look forward to the live broadcast of the final three games of the PotashCorp University Cup, presented by Co-op, and to being a part of a long-standing relationship between CIS and Sportsnet,” said Basil Hughton, University of Saskatchewan athletic director.
Tickets for the CIS championship can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.ca, by calling 306-938-7800 or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
All games (televised or non-televised) from the tournament will be streamed live on www.CIS-SIC.tv.
