BISONS SWEEP HUSKIES2013-02-09
The University of Manitoba Bisons completed a sweep to close out the Canada West women’s volleyball regular season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21) victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
With the win, Manitoba finishes the season at 12-10, finishing in one of seven playoff spots in the conference. Entering the weekend, the Bisons needed to win both matches to ensure a spot in the Canada West postseason.
Saskatchewan finishes the season at 3-19.
In all three sets, the Huskies kept up with the Bisons pace. But the experience of the Manitoba team helped them to the three set victory.
Rachel Cockrell led the Bisons to the win tallying a match-high 19 kills. Taylor Pischke added another 15 kills and 10 digs. Mariel Garcia recorded a team-high 10 digs.
Captain Candace Hueser led the Huskies in the match recording 16 kills, while Anne Hanbidge added another eight. Haley Williams had a strong night defensively recording match-high 15 digs.
Manitoba will play on the road in a Canada West quarter-final next weekend.
