Already securing a date in the post season for the sixth straight season, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie women’s hockey team will fight for positioning in the final weekend of the Canada West regular season.
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns visit Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink Friday and Saturday to close out the season.
Entering the final weekend in the regular season, the Huskies (10-12-4) sit in sixth place with 24 points. Depending on the outcomes this weekend, Saskatchewan could finish as a high as fifth place and could travel to face either the Regina Cougars, Alberta Pandas or UBC Thunderbirds in a quarter-final series.
In 2012-13 Canada West women’s hockey, six teams are granted life in the playoffs. The top two teams receive byes through a quarter-final series and home ice in semifinals against the winners of the quarter-finals. Canada West women’s hockey best-of-three quarter-finals run February 15-17.
Lethbridge (8-15-3) finishes the season on the outside of the playoff picture.
Since 1997-98, the Huskies are 29-13-3 against the Pronghorns.
Kirsten Reeves has been the best offensively for the Pronghorns throughout the season scoring a team-high 12 goals and three assists. Megan Bailey has also had a strong season with seven goals and eight assists, while rookie Sarah Spence has tallied six goals and seven helpers.
Fifth-year veterans Cara Wooster and Danny Stone have been the offensive sparks for the Huskies. Captain Wooster has tallied 12 goals and 17 assists, while Stone has 11 goals and 11 assists. Cami Wooster has also helped with the Huskies’ offence with six goals and 17 assists.
Rookie goalie Cassidy Hendricks has played in 23 games for the Huskies posting a .916 save percentage and a 2.40 goals against average. Crystal Patterson has appeared in 26 games for the ‘Horns recording a .917 save percentage and a 2.31 GAA.
