Five current members of the Huskie team, 10 alumni and three recruits will be participating in the meet that is also acting as the Athletics Canada national championship. The top level athletes who finish in the top three in each event and have consistently met Athletics Canada’s A Standard, can be nominated after the weekend to represent Canada at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Pole vault alum Kelsie Hendry is the athlete with the best shot to wear Canada’s colours at the games. Hendry did so in 2008 in Beijing. Shot putter alum Taryn Suttie enters the weekend event ranked second in the country but has not reached the standard yet.
Elecktra Charles (800m), Cossy Nachilobe (triple jump), Keegan Sharp (decathlon), Courtney Erickson (pole vault) and Mignon le Roux (pole vault) are all current Huskie athletes competing on the weekend. Sharp captured Canada West and CIS gold medals in the pentathlon in 2012, while Nachilobe won Canada West gold and CIS bronze in triple jump.
Hendry and Suttie are joined at the Canadian trials by fellow alum Andrew Smith (shot put), Teresa Hill (pole vault), Chris Crossley (decathlon, long jump), Kyle Donsberger (200m, 400m), Jennifer Souter (1500m), Jodi Souter (5000m), Chantel Spies (discus throw) and Elisabeth Dubourt (hammer throw). Hill and Jodi Souter each finished CIS eligibility in 2012. Hendry, Suttie, Crossley and Smith all hold the CIS records in their events, while Dubourt struck CIS gold in weight throw in 2009.
Michelle Young (100m hurdles), Alex Fedyk (200m, 400m) and Ryan Graf (100m, 200m) will all suit up for the Huskies in 2013.For more information on the Canadian Trials visit, www.2012trials.ca
