HUSKIES EXTEND WIN STREAK TO FOUR2012-12-01
With a dominant 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-23) win, the No. 7 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies competed the sweep over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan came out flying in the first two sets of the match quickly doubling the Dinos score. The Huskies were the first to the technical timeout in both sets and capitalized on 11 Calgary errors. Matthew Busse’s two service aces ended the first set 25-15 and his attack that skimmed the line finished the second 25-16.
Calgary put up a bigger fight in the third set, matching the Huskies point-for-point. After taking the lead for the first time in the match at 10-9, the Dinos looked like they were in control and were ready to force a fourth game. But after a Saskatchewan timeout at 23-21, the Huskies scored the next four points to seal the win. Setter Chris Gilbert’s tip scored the first of the run, followed by three straight kills by Joel Dyck that froze the Dinos back line for the 25-23 win.
With the win, the Huskies close the first half of the Canada West men’s volleyball season with a 7-5 record. Calgary falls to 2-10. A night earlier, the Huskies won 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15, 15-12). The Huskies are on a four match winning streak.
Busse led the Huskies with 11 kills, followed by Dyck with eight. Jeff Grant tallied nine digs in the game, while Braden McLean recorded five block assists and Robert Graham had three stuff blocks.
Greg Mann led the Dinos with 11 kills, while Trent Monagle recorded five. Cory Meeuwisse tallied seven digs.
The match was the last for both teams of the first half of the Canada West men’s volleyball season. Calgary will return to conference action at home hosting the Alberta Golden Bears, while the Huskies will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. Both series are scheduled for January 11-12.
