Kelsey Tulloch and Danny Stone each netted a pair of goals in a University of Saskatchewan Huskies 7-1 victory over the visiting University of Regina Cougars Friday night in Saskatoon’s Rutherford Rink.
Third-year Stone netted her first at 8:18 in the first period on the power play and added her second just 48 seconds into the third period. Tulloch scored at 2:59 in the third and again at 6:26 in the same frame. Stone also added a helper on Sara White’s opening goal at 1:14 into the game.
The game opened the Canada West women’s hockey season for both teams.
Other Huskie goals were scored by Cara Wooster at 10:00 in the second period and Kelsey Fenton at 8:58 in the third period.
Saskatchewan’s goalie Mackenzie Rizos’ bid for the shutout was foiled by Paige Wheeler at 18:01 in the third period on the power play. Wheeler beat Rizos after a scramble in front of the net.
Regina goaltender Jennifer Schmidt made 24 saves in the game, Rizos stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced. The Huskies threw 18 shots at Schmidt in the second period.
Saskatchewan’s power play was on the mark with five of their seven goals coming with the man advantage. Regina went 1-for-4.
The two teams will finish the home-and-home Saturday in Regina. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at The Co-operators Centre.
