HUSKIES LOOK TO STAY AT TOP OF STANDINGS2011-01-09
With a 10 game winning streak on the line, the University of Saskatchewan Huskie women’s basketball team looks to keep on pace with the top teams in the Canada West.
The Huskies host the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Friday and Saturday at the PAC.
The No. 1 ranked Huskies enter the weekend on a 10 game winning streak and sit in a tangle at the top of the conference standings with a 12-2 record. The record puts the Huskies in a tie with the University of Regina Cougars and University of Winnipeg Wesmen for first place.
Saskatchewan has easily breezed through competition in the second half sweeping Brandon University Bobcats January 7-8 and then sweeping University of Manitoba Bisons 82-67 and 82-68 last weekend. The Huskies only two blemishes on the season came in the second week of conference action against the University of Victoria Vikes.
The Huskies have the top scoring offence in the Canada West averaging 76.1 points per game. Leading the way are three Huskies averaging double digits each game - Kim Tulloch at 15.9, Jill Humbert at 14.4 and Katie Miyazaki at 13.1. Tulloch’s total puts her third in the conference and Humbert sits sixth. Miyazaki leads the team in rebounds with 6.6 per night. Post Jana Spindler chips in on the boards with 4.4 a game.
Thompson Rivers sits in eighth place in the standings with a 7-9 record and are on a six game losing-skid – suffering losses to Winnipeg and Regina in that time.
Averaging over 20 minutes per game Diane Schuetze, Kaitlyn Widsten, Jen Ju and Tracy Kocs all lead the Wolfpack in scoring. Schuetze averages 12. 9 points per game, followed by Widsten with 12, Ju with 10.3 and Kocs with 8.3. Schuetze also leads her team on the boards with 8.1 rebounds per game.
The Huskies post a perfect 6-0 record against the Wolfpack since Thompson Rivers joined the Canada West in 2006-06.
