BISONS UPSET HUSKIES2010-01-31

The visiting University of Manitoba Bisons pulled off a 69-57 upset of the No. 4 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

In the game, the Huskies had trouble sinking baskets shooting just 35.6%. They hit just three three-point shots of the 16 attempted in the game. Manitoba finished the game shooting 46.4%.

With the loss the Huskies drop to 10-6 on the season and remain in third place in the Canada West’s Prairie Division. Saskatchewan needs just one win to secure a Prairie Division playoff spot. They have two games in hand on second-place University of Alberta Pandas. Manitoba moves to a three-way tie for fifth-place at 7-10.

The first quarter mirrored the 77-44 win experienced by the Huskies a night earlier. Manitoba scored the first basket but the Huskies were able to quickly take the lead and finish the first ahead by two points at 13-11. At one point in the quarter, the Huskies led by seven.

A Kait Flett three-point shot at the beginning of the second quarter gave the Bisons the 14-11 lead and from there the Huskies could never get it back. Manitoba’s lead was as much as nine points in the quarter. The Huskies had trouble scoring and after a Jill Humbert jumper at 6:16 couldn’t find the net again in the frame until 2:39 when Amy Lackie hit a three-point shot from the left side. The half ended with Manitoba up 29-24.

Saskatchewan tried to close the gap and played strong at the end of the third quarter pulling Manitoba’s lead to within five points. But quick baskets by Flett kept the Bisons ahead by 10. Marci Kiselyk brought the game within six after hitting foul shots and a jumper just under the basket with just under seven minutes left in the game. The Huskies scored just one less than the Bisons in the frame but had trouble keeping Manitoba from answering their points.

Down by four points with just over four minutes to go in the game., Michele Hynes hit a three point shot to make the game seven points again. Although the Huskies kept trying they couldn’t catch up.

Flett and Hynes both netted 18 a piece for the Bisons. Flett also had a team-high nine rebounds. All-Canadian Lindsay DeGroot scored 20 in the game for the Huskies and had a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Huskies remain at home to host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend, while Manitoba returns home to host the University of Alberta.
