The No. 4 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies won their third game in a row with a 77-44 victory over the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
With the win the Huskies move to 10-5 on the season and sit in third place in the Canada West’s Prairie Division. They are just one win away from clinching a coveted Prairie Division playoff spot. Manitoba drops to 6-10 and could still be in the mix if the playoff crossover comes in effect.
Turnovers cost the Bisons in the game. Manitoba handed the ball to the Huskies 23 times and the Huskies capitalized scoring 27 points from the freebees. In the game, Saskatchewan shot 51.7% and missed just two free throws shooting 85.7% at the line. The Bisons shot 38.8% in the game.
Manitoba came out firing in the first quarter and led the game for a good chunk of the frame. Kayla Klassen hit a jump shot for the Bisons to take a 4-2 lead. They kept the lead until Alicia Wilson sunk a ball to make the game 11-9 at 3:17 in the first. From there the Huskies never looked back and the Bisons couldn’t regain the lead.
The Huskies exploded with offense in the second quarter scoring 24 points and had equally as strong defence allowing Manitoba to net just seven points. All-Canadians Kim Tulloch and Lindsay DeGroot combined for 11 points in the quarter.
The Bisons were able to play stronger in the third quarter scoring just two less than the Huskies but Saskatchewan took back over the game in the fourth scoring 22 more points. Manitoba just couldn’t catch up in the game.
Kim Tulloch was the best on the night for the Huskies with 20 points, followed by Lindsay DeGroot with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Mubo Ilelaboye scored 10 for the Bisons. Michele Hynes followed with eight points.
The two teams will battle again Sunday night at the PAC. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
