OTTAWA (CIS) – Hockey players Breanne George of Saskatchewan and Travis Fullerton of New Brunswick are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 17, 2010.
George, a third-year kinesiology student from Saskatoon tallied four goals and six points to lead the No. 8 Huskies (10-3-3) to a two-game sweep of the defending Canada West champion Manitoba Bisons, who entered the weekend ranked fourth in the nation thanks to a sparkling 12-2 conference record. In a 3-2 win on Friday, the 5-foot-3 forward, who sits second in Canada West scoring with 27 points in 16 games, scored all three Huskies’ goals including a pair in the third period that helped Saskatchewan erase a 2-1 deficit. The following night, she tallied the game-winning marker and added two assists in a 6-1 victory.
Saint Mary’s basketball player Justine Colley, Montreal swimmer Audrey Lacroix and McMaster basketball player Taylor Smith were also nominated for the women’s award.
Fullerton, a second-year student from Riverview, N.B., turned aside 77 of the 79 shots he faced to lead the top-ranked, undefeated and reigning University Cup champion Varsity Reds (19-0) to back-to-back road wins over Top-10 opponents. The 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore opened the weekend with a 30-save effort in a 6-1 victory over No. 9 Saint Mary’s (10-5-4) on Friday, and then stopped 47 pucks, including a penalty shot with just over seven minutes left in regulation, in a 2-1 defeat of No. 4 Acadia (13-4-1) on Saturday. Fullerton leads the AUS with a 1.88 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.
Basketball players Matt Thornhill of McGill, Nick Magalas of Toronto and Greg Stewart of Thompson Rivers were the other male nominees.
