HUSKIES SPLIT WITH WESMEN2010-01-16

The Winnipeg Wesmen earned a split in their weekend series against the number three ranked Saskatchewan Huskies with a 69-52 victory saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Huskies defeated the Wesmen in the opening game Friday night by a score of 62-46.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-6. The Huskies stand with a record of 7-5.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 16 points, nine rebounds. Randie Gibson chipped in with 14 followed by fellow fifth year player Jessica Stromberg's 13 points.

Lindsay DeGroot led the Huskies with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jill Humbert added eight points.

Both teams started the opening quarter concentrating on defense as neither team allowed the other much open space for good shots from the field. Winnipeg held the lead after the opening ten minutes by a score of 14-11.

In the second quarter, both teams exchanged baskets for the opening four minutes with the Wesmen holding a 21-17 lead. Winnipeg took control of the contest going on a 16-4 run to hold a 37-21 lead at halftime.

The Wesmen atarted the third quarter on a 8-3 run to increase their lead to 45-24 and held a double digit lead for the remainder of the quarter. Winnipeg increased their lead to 54-36 after three quarters.

The Huskies could come no closer than 15 points in the final quarter as Winnipeg held their ground for the victory.

Winnipeg will travel to British Columbia for a pair of games next week starting with Simon Fraser on Friday followed by a contest against Trinity Western on Saturday. The Huskies will head to Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley for games on Friday and Saturday.
