THREE HUSKIE RECORDS BROKE AT GOLDEN BEAR OPEN2010-01-16

University of Saskatchewan men’s pole vaulter Taylor Petrucha broke an 11-year old Huskie record with his vault of 5.21-metres at the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton Saturday.

Petrucha’s vault knocked Ryan Hvidston’s vault of 5.20-m set in 1999. The vault also gives Petrucha a dominant lead in the CIS rankings for the season.

He was one of 13 Huskies that earned medals on Saturday at the meet. The meet was the second of the season for the Huskies.

Two more athletes broke Huskie records at the meet. Andrew Smith’s 17.22-m throw in the shot put broke Justin Grief’s 2007 throw of 16.56-m. Chris Crossley finished with 3788 points in the pentathlon on Friday night broke Corey Armstrong’s 2001 record of 3671.

Also on Saturday, Jodi Souter, Marcia Richards and Caitlin Warkentin swept the medals in the 1500-m race. The field had 31 runners in it. Souter also won gold, a night earlier in the 1000-m race. Leah Vause won her second gold medal of the meet with her pole vault of 3.92-m. A night earlier, she won the gold in the long jump.

Saturday medal winners included: Julene Friesen, bronze, 600-m, 1:36.07; Jodi Souter, gold, 1500-m, 4:40.37; Marcia Richards, silver, 1500-m, 4:46.22; Caitlin Warkentin, bronze, 1500-m, 4:49.18; Chris Simair, silver, 1500-m, 3:59.46; Lauren Taylor, high jump, silver, 1.60m; Leah Vause, gold, pole vault, 3.92m; Taryn Suttie, gold, shot put, 14.12m; Kimberly Elliott, silver, shot put, 12.70m; Brendon Gryba, bronze, high jump, 1.85m; Taylor Petrucha, gold, pole vault, 5.21m; Cossy Nachilobe, silver, triple jump, 13.37m; and Andrew Smith, gold, shot put, 17.22m.

Friday night at the meet saw the Huskies win 12 medals including four in the pentathlon. Crossley’s gold and Keegan Sharp with the silver. Veronica Smits won the pentathlon by one point on the women’s side and Lindsay Tasker took the bronze.

Other medal winners Friday night included: Jodi Souter, gold, 1000-m; Amanda Herron, silver, 60-m hurdles, 9.18; Women’s 4X400-m relay, gold, 3:54.83; Leah Vause, gold, long jump, 5.40-m; Kristen Mackie, gold, weight throw, 14.79-m; Keegan Sharp, silver, 60-metre hurdles, 8.55’ Men’s 4X400-m relay, bronze, 3:27.13; Andrew Smith, gold, weight throw, 15.52-m; Veronica Smits, gold, Pentathlon 3303; Lindsay Tasker, bronze, pentathlon 3045; Chris Crossley, gold, pentathlon 3788; and Keegan Sharp, silver, pentathlon 3669.

The Huskies will compete again at home at the 2010 Sled Dog January 29 and 30.
