With the win the Huskies move to 9-3-3 and the Bisons drop to 12-3. Just three points now separate the Canada West second-place Bisons and the third place Huskies.
The Huskies were able to capitalize on Manitoba mistakes with all three George goals coming on the power play. Saskatchewan was with the man advantage eight times in the game.
“This was a big meeting for us in terms of the playoff picture,” said Huskie head coach Steve Kook. “We knew we had to come in and play strong against the Bisons. Every time we have played them in the last few years the game has been close.”
Manitoba’s Addie Miles opened the scoring in the game just 4:38 into the game on a power play when her shot from the right side of the net beat Huskie goaltender Vanessa Frederick. George scored her first of the three power play goals in the game to notch the game at one with just 15 seconds left in the first period on a scramble in front of the net.
Manitoba struck first again in the second period when a Tammy Brade shot deflected off Frederick and into the net at 18:55 to lead 2-1.
George added the final two power play goals within three minutes of each other. The first scored at 4:00 and the second at 7:22. Second-year forward Danny Stone assisted on all three Huskie goals.
It is just the third time the Huskies have beat the Bisons in their last 23 meetings since the 2006-07 season. The Manitoba tear includes two sweeps in the last two years in the playoffs.
Frederick made 28 saves in the game, while Manitoba’s Stacey Corfield stopped 21 shots for the Bisons.
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7 p.m.
Game Notes: The Huskies are hosting a Play For A Cure weekend in conjunction with the men’s hockey team. The Huskies will host Chuck-A-Puck, a trivia contest, sell pink jerseys and have an educational display booth. Money raised from Play For A Cure will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
