HUSKIES CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT2010-02-05

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies locked up a playoff spot with a 107-61 win over the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win the Huskies move to 11-6 and still sit in second place in the Canada West Prairie Division standings. The Huskies are still battling for a home playoff date two more Huskie wins or a one combined with a University of Regina Cougars loss would seal the home dates. The loss drops Lethbridge to .500 at 9-9. The Pronghorns are still fighting for one of the final playoff spots in the Prairie Division.

Turnovers cost the Pronghorns in the game. The Huskies were able to score 39 points off the 27 Lethbridge handovers. The Huskies also beat the Pronghorns on the boards nabbing 54 rebounds in the game and scoring 30 points on the second chance. Saskatchewan shot 50% in the game, while the Pronghorns had trouble finding the net shooting just 36.8%.

Saskatchewan and Lethbridge battled point-for-point throughout the first quarter each answering the scores. The lead changed hands back and forth 11 times in the frame. The Huskies came out ahead by one at 22-21.

Duncan Jones got the scoring going for the Huskies in the second quarter giving them a three point lead. Although Lethbridge answered on the next trip down the court, the Huskies were able to break away starting with a three point shot by Showron Glover. From there the Huskies lead built to as much as 17 in the frame with three minutes left. Strong defence by the Huskies held the ‘Horns to just 12 points in the second quarter. The Huskies scored 32 for the 54-33 lead heading into halftime.

The Huskies continued to build and maintain their large lead throughout the second half scoring 26 points in the third quarter and adding another 27 in the fourth. Lethbridge was only able to net 28 in the half.

Glover once again was the leading scorer in the game notching 29 points. Four more Huskies scored double digits on the night. Nolan Brudehl and Michael Lieffers each had 16 points, while Troy Gottselig scored 14 and Jones netted 12. Brudehl led the Huskies in rebounds with 12, while Lieffers added 11.

Price was the best on the night for the Pronghorns netting 16 points. Danhue Lawrence followed with nine of his own. Derek Waldner led Lethbridge on the boards with five rebounds.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
