A second half strike by Elise Emmott secured the victory and, more importantly, booked the University of Alberta Pandas soccer team into the conference playoffs, as they defeated the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 2-1, Saturday afternoon in Edmonton.
Emmott scored her fourth of the season, while team-mate Amanda Black scored her sixth of the year earlier in the first half, which tied her for the Alberta lead in goals with Heather Lund.
Jamie LeMay scored the Huskie goal, beating Alberta goalie Sabina Bullard in the second half.
The Pandas also got some help from the out-of-town scoreboard, as their closest competitors for the final playoff spot, Manitoba and the UFV Cascades, both lost.
With the win Alberta improves to 7-4-2 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 4-8-1.
Liz Jepsen's Pandas were flying in the first half, getting six shots on the Saskatchewan goal and forcing Huskies' 'keeper Alicia Middlebrook to be sharp early on. Alberta also earned four corner kicks, and took a total of 14 shots in Middlebrook's general director, but only Black was able to beat her in the first half, converting a feed from Emmott in the 14th minute.
Although Saskatchewan had three shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, they created a bit more offence in the second half. LeMay had two shots on goal in the second, and eventually beat Bullard in the 63 minute. Elizabeth Hudon drew the assist.
Just under three minutes later, the Pandas struck for goal once again, as Black set-up Emmott for the game-winning tally.
Alberta, along with Victoria, UBC and Trinity Western, will make up the Canada West Final Four teams for the playoffs, to be hosted at TWU in Langley, BC on the November 7 weekend. The Pandas will open the Final Four against the Spartans.
However, before heading into the post-season, the Pandas will need to close out their regular season campaign, and will do so against the Huskies in Saskatoon tomorrow afternoon.
