Golden Bear soccer brothers, Brett and Sean Colvin, scored two minutes apart late in the game to give the University of Alberta a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies, clinching a playoff berth for the home team.
The victory, coupled with a 4-0 Victoria win over Calgary, also this afternoon, leaves the 6-3-4 Bears to settle on fourth place in the Canada West standings.
The Saskatchewan squad made this afternoon’s game at Foote Field a hard-fought one, however, and drew first blood in the game when junior midfielder Josh Northey scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the seventh minute.
Sophomore Huskie goalie Simon Kluge made four saves in the first half to keep the Alberta offense at bay and followed with five more in the second half, but two quick strikes by the Colvins pushed the one-goal lead in the other direction.
Assisting on each other’s tallies, Sean Colvin struck first in the 74th minute by taking his brother’s pass amidst a scramble inside the 18-yard box and directing the ball towards the right corner of the net.
Just a little over two years younger, Sean would reciprocate his brother’s generosity just a little over two minutes later and provide Brett with a feed that also found the right corner, giving the older brother his team-leading fourth goal of the season and, more importantly, the 2-1 lead.
The two teams head to Saskatchewan for game two of the home-and-home series and to close out their regular seasons. Game time is 2:15 p.m. on Field 7.
