HUSKIES LOOK TO TURN AROUND SEASON2009-10-29

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies will look to turn around an uncharacteristic start to the season with a weekend series against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at Rutherford Rink.

Saskatchewan’s 1-5 start is the worst for the team in 13 years. In 1996-97, the Huskies had a 1-4-1 start to the season before turning it around with five straight wins. The Huskies went on to finish the season with a 16-9-3 record and played in the Canada West final.

The Huskies lone 2009-10 win game in a 6-0 shutout in Rutherford Rink over the University of Regina Cougars. Lethbridge sits at 3-2-1 with a sweep over the UBC Thunderbirds and an overtime win over the University of Calgary Dinos.

Since 2005-06, the Huskies have dominated the Pronghorns 11-4-1. The record includes three wins in their four meetings in 2008-09 – 6-1, 4-3 and 5-1. Lethbridge’s win in 2008-09 came in a 7-2 routing.

Lethbridge’s Dustin Moore sits tied for second in the conference with 11 points (two goals, nine assists), and rookie Adam Chorneyko has three goals and four assists to sit ninth among the Canada West leaders.

Steven DaSilva leads the Huskies with three goals and three assists, followed by Kyle Ross with one goal and four assists and rookie Kyle Bortis and second-year Chris Durand each with one goal and four assists. DaSilva sits 13th among the top conference scorers.  Three of the Huskies five losses this season were by one or two goals.

Scott Bowles has started all six games for the Pronghorns this season and enters the weekend with a 3.25 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.  Huskies fifth-year veteran netminder Jeff Harvey has played in five games this season with a 2.60 GAA and a .919 save percentage. Rookie keeper David Reekie has seen time allowing eight goals and making 38 saves.

Puck drop will be 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Rutherford Rink.
