DeGROOT NAMED CIS FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK2009-11-25

OTTAWA (CIS) – Basketball players Lindsay DeGroot of Saskatchewan and Jacob Doerksen of Trinity Western are the BlackBerry Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Nov. 22, 2009.
 
DeGroot, a fifth-year graduate student from Thetford, Ont., tallied 47 points and 17 rebounds over the weekend as the No. 4 Huskies (4-2) swept a two-game series against the Calgary Dinos, who entered the doubleheader with a 5-1 mark. The 5-foot-10 guard, a two-time all-Canadian at McMaster who transferred to Saskatchewan this season, had 21 points and five rebounds in a 97-80 win on Friday night and followed up with a 26-point, 12-board double-double in an 83-62 victory on Saturday.
 
Cape Breton volleyball player Hilary Cummings, Laval basketball player Chanelle St-Amour and Queen’s volleyball player Colleen Ogilvie were also nominated for the women’s award.
 
Doerksen, a fourth-year business student from Abbotsford. B.C., averaged 29.5 points per contest over the weekend as the Spartans (3-2) split a two-game set with Pacific Division rival Victoria (3-2). The 6-foot-6 forward, who was named CIS MVP a year ago in his first season at Trinity Western after transferring from UVic, netted 24 points in a low-scoring 62-59 loss on Friday and recorded a personal season-high 35 points on Saturday as the Spartans rebounded with an 83-71 win.
 
Dalhousie volleyball player Max Burt, UQTR hockey player Francis Charland and Wilfrid Laurier volleyball player Erik Kroman were the other male nominees.
