The University of Saskatchewan Huskie wrestling team is glad to be home.
For the first and only time this season, Huskies will hit the mat at home in the annual Huskie Open. The meet takes flight Friday and Saturday with Huskie wrestlers competing against conference teams from the University of Calgary, University of Regina and University of Alberta. Club teams will also participate in the tournament. More than 130 athletes are expected to compete in the event in the 10 men’s weight classes and eight women’s weight classes.
“It’s our one opportunity in the year to compete at home and we like to make the most of it,” said Huskies head coach Todd Hinds. “We enjoy showcasing our sport and the great athletes we have here at the UofS.”
And nobody is more excited for the chance to compete in front of the Saskatoon crowd more than the athletes. The Huskie athletes are looking forward to the opportunity to compete in front of family and friends.
Last year, both the Huskie men’s and women’s teams finished second. The Huskies finished with six medals at the tournament.
The Huskies will look to captains Daniel Olver (76-kg) and Jill Gallays (55-kg) for top results. Veterans Beth Thompson (82-kg) and Lindsay Wickstrom (48-kg) will look to have good results on the women’s side. Men’s wrestlers Ryan Myrfield, who was the 2009 CIS Rookie of the Year, and returning fifth-year heavyweight Tim Kent will also look to shine.
All members have been training and working hard. The team has already travelled to the U of C Dino Open and the Hargobind International, where the team learned valuable lessons competing against national team members.
The Huskie Open starts with the high school Hound Classic portion at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Varsity athletes will hit the mat at 10 a.m. Saturday. All matches are in the Education Gym.
