BISONS NIP HUSKIES2009-11-20

The University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team pushed their win streak to three games after the bye week, with a 5-2 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on November 20 at the Max Bell Centre.

The Bisons had to rely on netminder Steve Christie through the middle of the game to make a number of saves to keep their lead, which at one point stood at three goals. The Huskies got as close as 3-2, but the Bisons were able to build the lead back up to three, moving their record to 9-3-1 this conference season, while the Huskies fell to 6-6-1.

The Huskies scored early in the third period to cut the Bison lead to one, and they continued to press for the tying goal, but Christie made a number of saves, and a charge from Huskies’ captain Steven DaSilva, which resulted in his DaSilva’s ejection. The Bisons were able to put the game away with a goal from captain Calin Wild with five minutes left, and en empty netter from Nolan Waker.

Momentum from the first period carried into the second for the Bisons, but the Huskies were able to avoid any further damage on the scoreboard. As the period went on, the Huskies started to put more pressure on the Bisons with their forecheck and physical play, but Christie was able to keep the Bisons’ lead at two with a number of saves on rebounds, including a glove save with 15 seconds left in the frame. Heading into the third period, the Bisons led 3-1.

The first period couldn’t have started better for the hometown Bisons as an early save by netminder Christie gave the Bisons momentum. The offense seemed to get a bit of a spark from that save, as the Bisons scored three unanswered goals in five minutes, two of which were off the stick of Jared Walker, while the other came from Rick Wood. The Huskies were able to get one back shortly after the third Bisons goal, but the Bisons controlled most of the period, outshooting the Huskies 16-5, sending them into the dressing room with a 3-1 lead.

Both teams will square off against each other tomorrow night (November 21) at the Max Bell Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CT.
