University of Saskatchewan Huskie linebacker Taylor Wallace was acknowledged for his season with the Canada West Most Outstanding Defensive Player award Thursday.
The fifth-year 5-10, 216-pound Agriculture student started in all 10 games the Huskies played this season including an exhibition match against the University of Alberta Golden Bears and the Canada West semifinal against the University of Regina Rams. Wallace and the Huskie defence held their eight opponents to a combined 112 points – 55 less than the next best team. They also had the best pass defence efficiency, were tied for first with 21 sacks and stopped teams 73.7 per cent of the time in the red zone.
“Taylor is an unselfish hard working Huskie,” said Huskie defensive coordinator Ed Carleton. “He is the quintessential leader of the Huskie defence. He is a talented player that possesses great speed and strength - attributes he has improved on each year as a member of the Huskie football team. He regularly puts up scores that rank among the best on the team, each fall testing period. His accomplishments on the field are the direct result of his unbelievable work ethic and heart. He is a deserving all-star, a proud ambassador for Canada West as the President's trophy nominee and encompasses everything that is great about being a student-athlete on the Huskie football team.”.
The Huskies defensive captain, finished 2009 with 38 tackles (26 solo, 31 assisted), 1.5 sacks, one breakup and two fumble recoveries. Wallace finished 16th in the conference in tackles. He joined the Huskies as a red shirt in 2004. He suited up in games beginning in 2005 and has played in two Vanier Cup championships – 2005 and 2006. In five seasons, he’s tallied 145 tackles, 6.5 sacks, one breakup and three fumble recoveries.
Wallace joins linebackers Gary Sinclair (1980), Gerry Lashyn (1984), Kim Pasloski (1990), Warren Muzika (1997/1998), Mike Letendre (1999) and safety Trent Bagnall (1995/1996) as Huskie winners of the award. Wallace is now a nominee for the award – President’s Trophy – at the CIS level. Muzika and Letendre were given the nod at the CIS level for the Huskies in the past.
On Tuesday, Wallace was one of four Huskies named Canada West All-Stars. Offensive linemen Hubert Buydens and Patrick Neufeld, as well as cornerback Grant Shaw were also named to the team.
The Huskies will meet the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday in the 73rd Hardy Cup Saturday at Griffiths Stadium. Kick off is 1 p.m. For tickets, call 306-966-1111.
