BIG SUCCESS IN BURNABY2009-11-08

The University of Saskatchewan Huskie wrestling squad returns home from their best performance at the Hargobind International to date.

Hargobind International, hosted by a wrestling club in Burnaby, B.C., provides stiff competitions for the athletes. There are three levels of competitions – College, a national carding tournament and an international competition.

“It was our best performance at this tournament that offers a wide spectrum of competition,” said Huskie head coach Todd Hinds. “We had a great performance this weekend and am very pleased with the approach our athletes took. They had a great approach to warm up, were focused in their matches and stuck to their game place. The performance was solid.”

Huskie women’s captain Jill Gallays won her fourth straight international competition in the 55-kg weight class. Assistant coaches and former Huskie athletes Jeff Adamson (82-kg) and Megan Buydens (67-kg) both also won gold.

A national carding tournament is where wrestlers gain points to be in the running for the national team. It brings the best and brightest competition to the tournament from across the country. An athlete must go through the carding process each year. Adamson, Gallays and Buydens have all been on the national team.

Other Huskie wrestlers competed in the carding tournament. Daniel Olver and Chris Hobman each finished at 2-2, while Natasha Kramble and Lindsay Wickstrom finished 1-2.

In the college division , Landon Squires finished with a gold medal in the 90-kg and Tim Kent won a silver at 120-kg.

Saskatoon wrestling club member Vanessa Brown was also at the competition. She lost to a wrestler from India. She was the only one to take the Indian wrestler to three rounds.
