For the first time since 2006, the No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies will play in the Canada West Hardy Cup after a 53-23 semifinal victory over the University of Regina Rams Saturday in Saskatoon’s Griffiths Stadium.
The Huskies will face the No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos, who defeated the University of Alberta Golden Bears Saturday 45-13 in the other semifinal. The 73rd Hardy Cup will be played November 14 at 1 p.m. at Griffiths Stadium.
Scoring touchdowns on four of their first six drives, the Huskies jumped out to score 33 consecutive points. In the scoring run, Laurence Nixon threw three touchdown passes and Grant Shaw had a touchdown on an interception, a field goal and two singles. It was all scored before the midway point of the second quarter.
Saskatchewan took a 25-point lead into halftime and outscored Regina by a 20-15 margin in the second half to secure the win.
Nixon connected with receiver Cory Jones for three touchdowns and Braeden Geroge for two. Jordan Sisco had all three Rams touchdowns in the game.
Shaw opened the game with a single into the end zone and on the next possession Nixon found Braeden George in the end zone on an 11-yard pass. On the kickoff, Shaw earned his team another single to go up 9-0. On the next Huskie possession, Shaw found the uprights on a 16-yard field goal. Jones then caught a Nixon pass running it 67 yards into the end zone for his first of the game for the 19-0 lead to end the first quarter.
To start the second quarter, Shaw intercepted a Marc Mueller pass at the Saskatchewan 41 yard line returning it 69 yards for the touchdown. He stayed on the field to kick the point after to put his team up 26-0. Once again on their next drive Nixon found Jones, this time, for eight yards into the end zone for a 33-0 lead.
Regina finally was able to get on the scoreboard with a 13 play, 94 yard drive to the end zone on Sisco’s first of the game. The Rams added the two point convert to sit down 33-8.
The Huskies opened the scoring in the second half with Jones’ third of the game. It came on an 18-yard pass from Nixon at 10:12 in the third. It put the Huskies up 39-8. Regina answered with a one-yard Sisco run but failed on the two-point convert attempt to be down 39-14. The Rams added a single and the Huskies scored a five-yard touchdown to George in the frame to lead 46-15.
Backup Huskie quarterback Trevor Barss finished the game and opened the fourth-quarter with a four-play, 99-yard drive to the end zone. George had a 79 yard catch on the drive for his third in the game. The Rams added their final touchdown on the next possession. Sisco caught the ball on a nine-play, 81 yard drive.
Nixon completed 19-of-28 passes for 284 yards and five touchdowns. Jones ended up with six catches for 120 yards, while George had four receptions for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Jeff Hassler led Saskatchewan again on the ground, rushing nine times for 113 yards.
The Huskies were led defensively by Cody Halseth, who had 4.5 tackles, two interceptions, a pass breakup, and a fumble recovery. Nico Higgs led Saskatchewan with eight total tackles.
Mueller set Rams playoff records with 32 pass completions and 470 passing yards. Sisco ended up with eight receptions for 161 yards Brenden Owens caught six passes for 132 yards for the Rams. Mike Kerr had eight tackles for the Rams, while Thomas Irving had seven.
Tickets for the Hardy Cup will be available at the PAC Monday. They are also available by calling 306-966-1111. Season ticket holders can redeem their seats at the PAC starting Monday. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. on November 14.
