University of Saskatchewan Huskie women’s soccer midfielder Daniela Fuenzalida made a big impact in her freshman year in the Canada West.
The Arts & Science student was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star Thursday. It is the second year in a row that a Huskie has been named to the all-star team. She becomes the 28th all-star in Huskie women’s soccer history.
Fuenzalida played and started 13 games for the Huskies scoring one assist on 17 shots. She provided a strong and consistent presence in midfield for the Huskies challenging each opponent that came through.
“Daniela’s selection as a second team all-star in her first year is a huge accomplishment,” said Huskie head coach Tom LaPointe. “The coaches of the Canada West have selected her based on her consistent performance in each game this season. She has stood apart from other players in the Canada West with her ability to control the tempo of the game and cut defenses apart with her passing ability. Our coaching staff and teammates congratulate her on this award!”
Fuenzalida and the Huskies were in the playoff race until a shutout sweep by the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western University Spartans in B.C. in the second last week of the season knocked them too far out of contention. The Huskies finished at 5-8-1, seven points out of the final playoff position. It is the second straight year in a row the Huskies have finished with the record and tied a program best for wins finishing with five in 2005 and 2008.
The Huskies had big confidence boosters throughout the season tying UBC and playing within one goal of the reigning CIS champion Spartans early in the season. They also had wins over perennial contenders University of Alberta and the University of Manitoba.
Third-year striker Elizabeth Hudon led the Huskies on offense with nine goals and two assists on 58 shots. The 11 points moved her to 44 points in her career and broke the all-time goals record held by Erin Hammett and Jenine Stangier at 20 by five.
Saskatchewan will lose two players to graduation – midfielder Kristy Husulak and striker McKenzie Hodgins. Hodgins, who played with the Huskies from 2002-05, returned in 2009 for her final year. By the end of the season she had worked her way into the starting lineup scoring a goal on seven shots. Husulak started with the Huskies in 2005. She will finish her career with the Huskies with seven goals and seven assists. Other rookies who made an impact for the Huskies were Brooklyn Leier, Lindsay Manz, Andrea Guebert and Leanne Mylymok. The four were included in the Huskies starting lineup.
Striker LeMay (three goals, two assists); Manz (two goals and three assists) and midfield Megan Rowan (one goal two assist) all had a multiple point season for the Huskies.
The Huskies will continue to train throughout the offseason to prepare for 2010.
