University of Saskatchewan Huskie rookie running back Jeff Hassler was named the Canada West Football Offensive Athlete of the Week Monday after scoring three touchdowns on 224 rushing yards in a weekend tilt against the University of Regina Rams.
It is the eighth time this season that a Huskie athlete has won Canada West player of the week honours. Fellow football players Bryce McCall, Travis Gorski and Grant Shaw, as well as men's soccer player Jerson Barandica-Hamilton, women's soccer player Elizabeth Hudon and women's hockey player Breanne George have been named athlete of the week this season. Hassler is now a nominee for the CIS Football Offensive Player of the Week award.
Hassler, who has only played in four games after suffering an injury in fall camp, scored on a two-yard run, a five-yard run and a six-yard run. The first touchdown put his team up 7-0, the second 14-3 and the third 35-17. The Business student from Okotoks, Alta., gained the yardage on 23 carries. He also had 28 receiving yards on two catches.
Hassler and the Huskies (7-1) will meet the Alberta Golden Bears (3-5) in a Canada West semifinal, Saturday at 1p.m. at Griffiths Stadium.
