HUSKIES HAVE REPRESENTATION IN CFL2009-06-29

Eight former University of Saskatchewan Huskie football players have found their way onto to Canadian Football League rosters for the 2009 season.

The Huskie alums appear on five of the eight CFL rosters with the Saskatchewan Roughriders leading the way with three former Huskie athletes. The Montreal Alouettes have two on their roster, followed by the Edmonton Eskimos, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats with one each.

Offensive linemen Gene Makowsky and Jordan Rempel will start the season on the Roughriders injured reserve. Rempel played three seasons with the Huskies being named the Canada West’s Most Outstanding Lineman in 2006. He was traded to the Roughriders in April from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats where he spent the 2008 season. Makowsky played with the Huskies from 1991-94, while Boreham, a place kicker, played the 1999 season with the Huskies before transferring to the Manitoba Bisons.

Paul Woldu cracked the Montreal lineup right after being drafted in fifth round in the 2008 CFL Canadian draft and found himself playing in the 2008 Grey Cup with the Alouettes. He played with the Huskies for two seasons and was named a Canada West All-Star and a CIS First Team All-Canadian in 2007. Woldu is joined by Scott Flory on the Alouettes. Flory was named the CFL’s top lineman in 2008. He was a CIS All-Canadian in 1997 and 1998 for the Huskies.

Graeme Bell, a running back, and Kelly Bates, an offensive lineman, will hit the turf with new teams in 2009. Bell moves to the Eskimos from the Blue Bombers and Bates will play for the Blue Bombers after spending six seasons with the B.C. Lions. Bell made a triumphant return to the CFL in 2008 after recovering from an assault injury that was expected to end his football career. Bates spent five seasons with the Huskies from 1997-2001.

Ivan Brown will appear on the Montreal practice roster. Those players on the practice roster are paid to practice with the team but could be signed by another organization.

The CFL season opens Wednesday with the Toronto Argonauts visiting the Tiger-Cats, followed by the Alouettes in Calgary against the Stampeders. For a full CFL schedule visit, www.cfl.ca.
