MAJOR AWARD NOMINEES

Huskie Athletics is proud to announce the nominees for the Major 7 Awards to be handed out at the 2010 Huskie Salute on April 1 at TCU Place.

The Major 7 Awards are handed to those athletes who have had outstanding seasons for the green and white, as well as made big contributions on the field, in the classroom and in the community during their time with the Huskies.

And the nominees are…

HOWARD NIXON TROPHY - MALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Lane Britnell, Track & Field
 ·       Won Canada West silver in Pole Vault, Canada West Rookie of the Year
Matthew Busse, Volleyball
·       Led his team with 17 service aces, second with 161 kills, a CIS All-Rookie
Joel Seutter, Football
·       Started all games for the Huskies, member of Team Canada

PAT LAWSON TROPHY - FEMALE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

Daniela Fuenzalida, Soccer
·       Started all 13 games, named a Canada West Second Team All-Star
Candace Hueser, Volleyball
·       Led her team with 230 kills, 144 digs and 23 blocks

E. KENT PHILLIPS TROPHY - MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Chris Crossley, Track & Field
·       Won two Canada West gold medals, won one CIS gold medal, holds the CIS, Canada West and Saskatchewan record in the pentathlon, CIS First Team All-Canadian
Showron Glover, Basketball
·       Won the CIS Championship, led the Canada West and CIS in points per game and steals, First Team All-Canadian, CIS Championship Tournament MVP
Daniel Olver, Wrestling
·       Team captain, won fourth straight Canada West title, won CIS gold medal in the 76-kg, CIS First Team All-Canadian

MARY ETHEL CARTWRIGHT TROPHY - FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Lindsay DeGroot, Basketball
·       Led Canada West and CIS in steals, second in scoring in Canada West and seventh in CIS, fourth best single season point record for Huskies, First Team All-Canadian
Jill Gallays, Wrestling
·       Second straight year winning Canada West and CIS gold in the 55-kg, First Team All-Canadian
Breanne George, Hockey
·       Tied Canada West record of 28 goals, second in CIS for goal scoring, Canada West MVP, First Team All-Canadian
Jodi Souter, Cross Country/ Track & Field
·       Won the Canada West cross country title, won three Canada West medals in track & field, First Team All-Canadian
Taryn Suttie, Track & Field
·       Second year winning Canada West gold in shot put, won CIS gold in shot put, holds the CIS and Huskie record for shot put, First Team All-Canadian

RUSTY MACDONALD TROPHY - ALL-ROUND MALE ATHLETE

Jeff Harvey, Hockey
·       Leads the Huskies in all-time goaltending, three-time major award winner and all-star
Tim Kent, Wrestling
·       Multiple Canada West and CIS medal winner at heavyweight, business masters student, member of the Golden Key Honours Society
Taylor Wallace, Football
·       An all-star and major award winner, inspirational leader on and off the football field

VALERIE GIRSBERGER TROPHY - ALL-ROUND FEMALE ATHLETE

Kristen Bews, Hockey
·       Alternate Captain, involved in Huskies Play For A Cure initiative
Jill Humbert, Basketball
·       Team Captain, All-Academic, CIS bronze medal winner, CIS Championship tournament all-star
Kailey Smith, Track & Field/Cross Country
·       HAC representative, dual sport athlete, multiple Canada West & CIS medal winner and major award winner
Beth Thompson, Wrestling
·       Academic All-Canadian, four time Canada West medalist, volunteers with the SPCA and PAAL programs
