CIS Top 10 Tuesday - Men's Hockey Opens No. 3

TORONTO (CIS) – The StFX X-Men (men) and reigning champion Montreal Carabins (women) are the top-ranked CIS hockey programs to begin the 2016-17 season.

StFX  (2-0-0) earned 120 points to claim the No.1 position for the third time in program history and first since 1993-94, ahead of UNB (1-0-1), Saskatchewan (2-0-0), Alberta (0-0-0) and UQTR (2-0-0). On the women's side, Montreal received 40 points to open in top spot for the second straight season, with UBC (1-1-0), Saint Mary's (0-0-0), Guelph (0-0-1) and St. Thomas (0-0-0) rounding out the top five.

Last March, the X-Men captured the silver medal in their second straight appearance at the CIS Championship, beating Saskatchewan 3-2 in a triple overtime in the semifinal before falling to UNB 3-1 in the gold medal game. StFX began its season with a 5-0 shutout at Dalhousie Friday followed by a 4-1 victory over Acadia Saturday in its home opener.

The Carabins won their second national title in four years last season with a dominant 8-0 blanking of UBC on the strength of a hat trick by rookie forward Alexandra Labelle – who was named Friday to the Canadian women's roster for the 2017 Winter Universiade.  Montreal kicks off its RSEQ regular season with a cross-town visit to Concordia on Sunday.

In other CIS sports, Laval (men's cross county and women's soccer), Alberta (men's soccer), Guelph (women's cross country) and McMaster (women's rugby) maintain their pole positions for another week.
