Brian Gavlas took over the Huskie men’s volleyball program as head coach in 1992 from Tom Graham. Since taking over the team, Gavlas has led the Huskies to four Canada West Championship titles and 10 appearances in the CIS Championship tournament. Under him, the team was crowned CIS champions twice -1998-99 and 2003-04 – and finished with a silver twice -1997-98 and 1999-00. The Huskies finished as one of the top two teams in the Canada West 11 out of the 16 years Gavlas has been at the helm. Gavlas played five seasons with the Huskies as a setter. As an athlete, he was named a Canada West all-star three times and a CIAU All-Canadian twice. With the Huskies, he captured three Canada West titles and one national championship. In the 1987-88, CIAU Championship win he was named the tournament's MVP. He graduated with degrees from both the College of Physical
Education and the College of Education at the University of
Saskatchewan. Gavlas has always been committed to the advancement of the sport of volleyball at all levels. He is a member of the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association's High Performance Committee, CIS Coaches Association, and the Canadian Coaches Association.
For his success, he has been named Canada West Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year four times (1995-96, 1997-98, 2000-01 and 2012-13) and CIS Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2000-01. He has also been named Huskie Athletics Coach of the Year four times – 1995-96, 1998-99, 2000-01, 2012-13. He has also been named the 3M Canadian Coach of the Year in 2001. He also coached on the international scene. He was an assistant coach at the 2005 Summer Universiade in Izmir, Turkey, as well as head coach of the DTV Volleyball Club, a professional team in Duran, Germany for one season in 2001-02.
